Today is Tuesday and I'm writing the blog for Monday and Tuesday.
My big adventure yesterday was finally getting around to driving. I've mentioned the traffic is a little .... interesting here, and I've been observing and listening to people driving and talking about driving, so I thought yesterday - Enough! it is time to get onto the road.
In Kuwait, people drive on the right hand side, and the steering wheel is on the left. I was a bit nervous about that, but actually it is pretty easy to adjust to, although on my very first trip - driving Lenny to Burger King after school - I found myself on the wrong side of a small side road, just through force of habit. Luckily, there was noone else on the road.
On Monday I played Bach piano on the CD player and created a nice cocoon of calm, and off I went. It was all pretty easy, until I left Avenues Mall too late and got drawn like a moth to the flame into the worst traffic I have ever driven in. For any one who knows, I got stuck on the Fourth Ring Road at school finish time, and it was absolutely chaotic - people getting off buses in the middle of the road, cars pushing, no lane order at all - it was actually quite exilarating, because I had to really keep my wits about me. And then I got caught in a terrible snarl outside the Pakistan School, and all I could do was laugh.
Anyway, I made it home in one piece, a bit shaky, and Carol came over for a cuppa so I could debrief.
Today, I got Amir to drive me in the afternoon. The best thing is to drive before 6.30am, stay at home between 6.30am and 8am when everone is going to school and work, venture out till 1pm, then scurry home till 3pm - drive 3pm to 5pm when everyone has lunch and a nap, and then for goodness sakes make sure you're home by 5, because after that the traffic is a nightmare all over again.
The photo today is of a bunch of freshly washed carpets, laid out on a wall to dry.
So is this what is meant by the term 'rug up'?
Very pleased to hear that you braved the roads Janet. One of the benefits of being a bit aphasic about left and right is that Id dont have much baggage about driving on the 'other'side of the road, my tip for this is just think as the driver I have to be close to the middle of the road.
Also Janet I keep doing a double take when you say 'my friend Carol', oh hello I think here I come but no, so dissapointing! I Miss You Janet Carol xx
