So we've just had a few days holiday - Kuwait slowed down dramatically - barely any traffic on the roads, which is so nice. Lots of people go away for Eid, or they spend a lot of time with their families, and all government departments shut down for the whole week. It is also the week of the hajj, or pilgrimage to Mecca, and millions of people from all over the world converge on Mecca. It must be a logistical nightmare - there is even a department of Hajj in Saudi Arabia, and a separate airport which caters for all the pilgrims.
We have had a pretty quiet time - we spent another day with our new Kuwaiti friends at their holiday house - another lovely day where we talked and ate, then went for a walk around the neighbourhood. Lenny had a wild time with the boys - he absolutely loves playing with these kids, they get on really well.
We also had dinner with some American friends, at their house, and with Carol and Mark, our friends from Brisbane who have just moved up from Saudi. Very nice dinner of smoked turkey - a bit on the Thanksgiving side of things, which doesnt mean much to us Australians but is a big deal in the States.
Yesterday Lenny went to a friend's house to play. Tom's mum, Kate, who has also not been here for very long, had made her first Victoria Sponge cake, and was feeling more settled as a result - despite the fact that the cake is square instead of round - such are the constraints with which we live! It was delicious. It's funny the things that make you feel at home. I must make some cakes - Kuwait settling therapy.
Yesterday afternoon, our new table was delivered - Asif the Pakistani carpenter came over, and I am thrilled with it. It's quite huge, and works really well in the loungeroom.
Now we have ordered our bed - based on a design I found in a magazine, we have ordered a king size bed with matching sidetables, and a matching day bed. Now I have to decide what colour - something extravagant and opulent.
