I try to buy the newspapers when I go out. In Singapore, I made sure we had the Straits Times delivered to our home, and every morning I quickly read an overview of what things were in the news that day. A lot of expats reckon it is propaganda (well, so what's new, I hear you mutter), but it is still interesting, and important to know what's going on day to day - it's always good to have things to chat to the taxi drivers about.
Well, that's Singapore - here there are three English newspapers in common circulation - The Kuwait Times - which has a lot of local news, including sometimes distressing information about car accidents (of which there are many every day), and bashings and murders, and also interesting news about general life in Kuwait. The Arab Times , although a Kuwaiti newspaper, seems to be less localised, more general news about the region, and the Al Watan newspaper, published by International Herald Tribunal is the same, but a different more international (probably Western) perspective.
The latest news is the death of the Crown Prince Sultan in Saudi Arabia. Kuwait and Saudi Arabia have very close ties, and three days of mourning have been declared here. There was some talk about the schools being closed, but I haven't heard any more about that, and noone has mentioned it at Michael's work, so perhaps it is just within the public service. I'll buy the paper today and check it out.
We have 12 English TV Channels and 5 of them are 24 hrs talk shows about the Crown Prince Sultan's passing.... it's interesting and very annoying all in the one thought. Oh and it's all in Arabic...shame I'd like to know what they are saying...
